Why am I seeing this Day?

"Today" for the MPOD is defined as the current day in the Eastern Time Zone, because that is where the MPOD server is located.

The URL "www.tucsonmeteorites.com/mpod.asp" automatically selects the picture for the current day in the Eastern Time Zone and redirects you to the daily picture page.

If you are in Hawaii and go to the MPOD at 10:00 pm local time on October 23, you will see the picture for October 24.

If you are in Germany and go to the MPOD at 2:00 am local time on October 23, you will see the picture for October 22.

Why not just use local time to figure out which picture to display? Pictures are placed on the web site well in advance. Since all meteorite people are very clever, some would be tempted to look ahead by changing the date and time on their computer. By using the server's time, this possibility is eliminated and artistic tension is heightened.
