245 and 296 grams. Iron, ungrouped
TKW 1600 kg. Fall not observed. Found 2009 in East Uweinat Desert, Egypt.
Matthias writes:
IMHO Gebel Kamil is a wonderful and still underestimated iron meteorite. After all, it's the builder of one of the most beautiful and distinctive meteorite craters we know. The fall seems to have occurred about 5000 years ago and so in historical times (beginning of Egypt's "Old Kingdom").
Both pieces show the typical and aesthetically appealing different kinds of surface: nubby, lizard-like, or smooth, depending on whether having been embedded in the sand or exposed to the wind.
The 245 g sample (pics 1 and 2) clearly resembles a scorpion; the 296 g specimen (pics 3, 4) resembles, at least for me and I don't know why exactly, a mini treasure chest.
The Italian leader of the initial expedition to the crater informed me that, having arrived at the crater, the ground was completely covered with shrapnel of varying sizes (and of course the majestic main mass, Gebel Kamil's sole individual). Later, at their second arrival, the crater was almost cleared up.

Well you folks certainly know how to have fun with all of this, thanks for the laughs and enlightenment! My two cents: pic 2 looks like a hedgehog, eye, mouth and tail included. Pic 4 looks like a kitty cat looking down upon its* paw. Lol, thanks again folks! |

Thanks, companera*os.
Well, Anne, to be exact: an o r i e n t a l treasure chest. Makes it most probably easier.
For the camel I'm afraid one have to put two of them together. Otherwise only a dromedar. |

Thank you Matthias. Yes, on pic #1 and #2 that Gebel Kamil does look like a scorpion, a very fat scorpion. But on Pic #3 and #4, seeing a treasure chest requires a great deal more imagination. And I am still waiting to see a Gebel Kamil piece that looks like a camel/Kamil. :-) |

Thank you for another great GK with its omnipresent je ne sais quoi, which I call beautifully interesting. Yes, its different 'skins' are all fun to observe. |

Really Nice piece. Lots of character. Like the sharp tail. |

Fantastic examples of this ungrouped crater maker. Most pieces on the present market stem from later finds in deeper ground levels. They don*t show the typical weathering crust. I prefer the quality of the first finds as they got the typical lizard-like surface. |
