I saw this at a neighbor's house a few nights ago. A friend of his gave it to him and reported that it was found near Elephant Butte, New Mexico, about 50 years ago.

Comparing a thorough XRF analysis of a known Canyon Diablo and of this meteorite would help. If the % value of all the components are identical, that should answer the question. And you are in Tucson, surely someone of U of A has an XRF. Maybe Dolores Hill.

Canyon Diablo seems right to me also. How does one go about verifying that meteorite X is the same as an already classified meteorite?

I agree with bob/Robert. Canyon Diablo did travel a lot!. Rifle is another example of that.

Well, Paul, as Elephant Butte NM is a pretty suspicious place and the piece looks pretty promising - why not cut a tiny sample for classification? That would be an important find.
