  Iron, IIIAB

TKW 148.8 kg. Fall not observed. Found 1855, Free State, South Africa.

jnmczurich writes:
Pictures 1 and 2: Orange River (Iron) is a beautiful looking, superb fresh octahedrite, found in South Africa in 1855. It is a IIIAB (former IIIB) iron, Og 1.35 mm with shock hatched kamacite structure.

The 3.24 kg slice (350 x 220 x 9 mm) with high display character shows a fine grained alpha-2 zone, which is the heat affected outer rim of 1 to 4 mm width, developed during the atmospheric flight. Picture 2 left side, Picture 3 right side.

Picture 5: The main mass was partially sliced by Marlin Cilz & Ray Meyer in 1992/93. The iron is (or was) regmaglyped on all sides.

Since 1993 in my collection.
