The original "Benz Patent Motor Car" from from Carl Benz 1886 (later called Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft) marked the birth of the world’s first automobile. From 1888, the internal combustion engine was also used in aviation, first for airships and then for airplanes. Although the construction of aircraft engines only contributed a small amount to sales before the First World War, this business area seemed promising for Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft. This company success is also indicated by the Mercedes star (or trident) introduced as a company logo in 1909. The Mercedes trident still stands for "mobility on land, on water and in the air". But there is now reliable (metallographic) evidence that the French car brand Renault began its first activities much longer ago, around 4.4 billion years ago. Well, at least as far as the company logo is concerned, the French were faster than the German car manufacturers...

During a recent metallographic preparation work on a Comanche Creek Reservoir sample (IIAB, granular hexahedrite, former name: Squaw Creek), the Renault company logo was surprisingly "excavated/uncovered" in its most original form, consisting of schreibersite (FeNi)3P. The unetched, as well the subsequent etching with alcoholic nitric acid of the metallographic sample clearly shows the original 4.4 billion years old Renault company logo. Compared to the today’s company logo, Renault has it only slightly revised to date. A practical example is the Renault logo on our old Renault Scenic family car, which has been running perfectly for over 12 years … which comes – in my opinion – close to about 4.4 billion years ;-)

I remember reading some where that Canyon Diablo Irons were shipped by rail in the old days and melted down as scrap into Ford Meteors.
