The Holbrook meteorite shower occurred on July 19, 1912. An estimated number of 14'000 stones fell. In fact, meteorites are still recovered from the strewnfield today.
The stone shown here (ex Lafayette College Mineral Collection) was apparently recovered soon after it fell, as indicated by the fresh, jet-black fusion crust. Unfortunately, the price tag glued on the specimen is no longer correct: Neither is the stone 490 grams (it was obviously broken some time in the past, so the present mass is 269 grams), nor did the present owner pay just $ 25 for it... :)

Thanks for your comments! :)
@Bob: Foote was the main distributor of the Holebrook stones at the time after the fall. According to a 1912 price list from Foote, $0.05/g (for lots of smaller specimens) to $0.08/g (for complete individuals) was the common price at that time. Remeber, though, that $25,-- in 1912 correspond roughly to the value of $600,-- in 2013. Anyway, still no bad deal... :) |
